Tribute to a hero
The base flag in front of 36th Wing Headquarters is lowered Nov. 1 to mark the passing of Retired Brig. Gen. Paul Tibbets. General Tibbets was the pilot of The Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic weapons employed in combat. General Tibbets’ mission helped bring about a quick end to World War II, which saved countless American lives by avoiding an invasion of the Japanese home islands. Most historians agree if such an invasion had taken place, the heavily fortified Japanese cities and military installations would’ve exacted a horrific price in terms of allied and American losses.
