Policy bans drivers from cell phone use on Guam

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam --  People in Guam are now banned from using cell phones while driving.

Though the ban on cell phones while driving is new to the island of Guam, Andersen has had a similar policy for years.

"Cell phone use while driving has been illegal on base since 2006," said Master Sgt. David Squires, 36th Security Forces Squadron. "I definitely approve of the new policy in Guam; most accidents are caused by distractions."

Put into effect March 28, Guam law calls for public awareness and education of these new restrictions.

The first offense will result in a fine of no less than $100. Repeat offenders will receive a fine of $500 and if the violation results in a traffic collision the fine would be no less than $1,000 with the possibility of having their driving privileges revoked.

The law however does allow for the use of hands-free devices and it exempts emergency calls made from the driver's vehicle.
