Team Andersen sharpens their public service skills at public service seminar

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam --  More than 50 Team Andersen members public service seminar at the Palm Tree Golf Course Conference Center Oct. 23, informing its personnel of current public service policies and procedures.

The public service seminar is offered on Andersen every three months. This seminar is part of a series, and has been offered on Andersen before with subjects such as conflict resolution in the workplace and management in the workplace.

Dr. Richard Coberg, the professor of Advanced Programs, Project Director and Adjunct Professor, College of Liberal Studies, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla., led the hour-long seminar, "Motivating Yourself and Your Employees on Andersen."

In this series, the experts in the field of public service may change, but the message is always about improving one's public service skill set.

"This seminar provided a civilian sector approach for military application," said Tech. Sgt. Sally Scott, 36th Security Forces Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of the Andersen Confinement Facility. "We as Air Force members are always told to be motivated, find motivation and give motivation, but we're never told how. This seminar provided the knowledge of how to motivate others by finding what motivates them."

This seminar is important to Team Andersen because the personnel in leadership positions are always looking for new ways to motivate their airmen, said Ashley Smith, the site director for the Oklahoma University office located at the Andersen Education Office. This seminar gave the military a chance to think outside of the box. Motivation is one of the hardest things to understand as a leader because everyone is motivated by different things.

"The main thing that I learned from the seminar is that not everyone is motivated the same way," Ms. Smith said. "There are many different types of motivation that leaders can use. A few ways to motivate are simply not discounting other peoples' ideas, and to listen to an entire idea before making a judgment." 

Another installment of the public service seminar will be held in mid-January.
