Team Andersen surpasses America Recycles Day goals Published Nov. 26, 2012 36th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental flight ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Team Andersen racked up signatures from 95 consumers who pledged to recycle, surpassing its commitment to the National America Recycles Day organization of 50 pledges here, Nov. 16. By taking the pledge, consumers commit to learn what materials are collected for recycling in their community and act to reduce personal waste by recycling. The ARD event was a tremendous success thanks in large part to Yvette Bordallo and Shermaine Garcia of the 36th Civil Engineer Squadron environmental flight, who organized the event in coordination with the Andersen Base Exchange. Information provided to customers included what to recycle, where to take recyclables, recycling cost avoidances and energy savings by recycling. The exchange offered a five-cent savings for each recyclable grocery bag used for purchases. Use of the recyclable bags help minimize the amount of plastic bags being disposed of at landfills. The success and the movement of Team Andersen towards its recycling goals can be seen through the numbers, as the National Recycling Average is 34 percent whereas Team Andersen is at 55 percent.
