Andersen home to PACAF Outstanding Airman of the Year Published April 11, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Mariah Haddenham 36th Wing Public Affairs ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- An Airman from the 36th Civil Engineer Squadron at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, was recently recognized by Pacific Air Forces for superior performance. Staff Sgt. Joshua Hanna, 36th CES explosive ordnance disposal journeyman, was selected as PACAFs 2012 Outstanding Airman of the Year in the Airman category. The PACAF Outstanding Airman of the Year recognizes 12 of the command's outstanding enlisted personnel for superior leadership, job performance, community involvement and personal achievements. "It feels good to be the one that was selected to represent not only Andersen AFB, but all the bases in PACAF," said Sergeant Hanna. "I'm sure there were a lot of deserving candidates. To be the one that was ultimately selected is exciting, but comes with a lot of pressure as well." Some of his accomplishments include clearing 8,247 ordnance items from 2.9 million acres of Nevada Test and Training Range, a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, disarming 10 improvised explosive devices, receiving the Army Commendation Medal and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. "From deployment experiences and other great TDYs down to a lot of great volunteer opportunities, I had a lot of doors open for me," Hanna said. "I also had a lot of support from everyone in my flight and my squadron. Without their skills and support, there is no way I would have made it this far. To look at this award and say it is something that 'I' achieved would be a lie. It couldn't have happened without them." Sergeant Hanna joined the Air Force in December 2006 and attended explosive ordnance disposal training at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. Following completion of training, he reported to his first duty assignment at the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., and is now stationed at Andersen AFB.
