11/26/2012 - ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Andersen Middle School students and faculty now have the opportunity to use an all-weather artificial turf field that was recently installed at Andersen's Middle School.

"Along with supporting educational programs, the field can be used for extracurricular and after-school activities," said Dr. Maria Rubio, Guam district Department of Defense Education Activities public affairs officer. "The field can also be used for joint community activities if pre-approved by the Andersen Middle School principal."

The turf field was installed to improve the safety for students, reduce annual maintenance costs and provide a year-round surface that will increase availability for activities.

"Modern turf materials behave similar to natural grass," said Jeff Arrington, Department of Defense education activity Guam district superintendent. "The surface provides cushion and reduces common hazards such as rocks and holes that could lead to injury."

The new surface of the field drains water more efficiently, nearly eliminating long-term cost on maintenance and upkeep. The surface will also be more available year round because of its ability to drain water and its weather durability.

With the many benefits brought about by the new field, such as availability and safety improvements, Andersen Middle School will be able to expand on their recreational and educational activities.

To reserve the field for joint-community activities, contact the Andersen Middle School at 366-3880.
