United States Forces Japan commander Lt. Gen. Edward Rice and Japan Air Self Defense Force 3rd Air Wing commander Maj. Gen. Hideo Wakabayashi visit Andersen

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam - Maj. Gen. Hideo Wakabayashi, Japan Air Self Defense Force 3rd Air Wing commander, asks Lt. Col. Christopher Niemi, 90th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron director of operations, questions about the F-22A Raptor to during a tour here Feb. 13. The F-22A?s engines produce more thrust than any current fighter engine. The combination of sleek aerodynamic design and increased thrust allows the F-22A to cruise at supersonic airspeeds (greater than 1.5 Mach) without using afterburner -- a characteristic known as supercruise. Supercruise greatly expands the F-22A 's operating envelope in both speed and range over current fighters, which must use fuel-consuming afterburner to operate at supersonic speeds.
