ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam - Lt. Col. Orlando "Slider" Sanchez, 90th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron pilot, briefs Lt. Gen. Edward Rice, United States Forces Japan commander, Maj. Gen. Hideo Wakabayashi, Japan Air Self Defense Force 3rd Air Wing commander, Brig. Gen. Phil Ruhlman, 36th Wing commander, and other JASDF members on the F-22A Raptor during a tour here Feb. 13. The 90th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron is deployed to Andersen from Eielson AFB, Alaska, as a part of the Theater Security Package. The F-22 Raptor is the Air Force's newest fighter aircraft. Japanese Air Self Defense Force Airman 1st Class Shunsaku Suzuki, inpects the prop of an E2-C aircraft Feb. 5 at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam during Cope North 09-1 after a local area mission. The Cope North exercise is one of the longest-running series of exercises in the Pacific theater. Since the first Cope North exercise in 1978, thousands of American and Japanese personnel have honed skills that are vital to maintaining a high level of readiness. The exercise has been in the planning stages for several months and bears no connection to any real-world events. This will be the tenth time the United States and Japan have held a Cope North exercise on Guam, and it will be the fourth time that the JASDF will use live ordnance. JASDF F-2s launch during Cope North 09-1
The E-2Cs join more than 20 other aircraft, including Aggressor F-16 Fighting Falcons, B-52 Stratofortress', Navy EA-6Bs, and JASDF F-2s. Cope North is a regularly scheduled exercise scheduled for Feb.2-13 designed to enhance U.S. and Japanese air operations in defense of Japan.
