Whether an individual wants to lift weights or play basketball with fellow Airmen, the Coral Reef Fitness and Sports Center has everything Airmen need to stay fit to fight.

"The gym isn't just a place for muscular gains, but more so life gains," said Senior Airman Crystal Redd, 36th Force Support Squadron fitness specialist. "People come to the gym to relieve stress, improve fitness standards and spend time with family, friends and loved ones beyond the sofa and TV screen."

The CRFC staff is composed of 16 members working together to ensure the fitness center is kept clean, well equipped and ready to offer Andersen members a safe and effective workout.

The fitness center team's day begins around 3:30 a.m., making sure all lights and TVs are on. Then the team ensures everything is swept, workout stations are cleaned and wipes are available. After that, the staff cleans the elliptical trainers and treadmills. Once everything is cleaned, the specialists open the doors for the early risers at 4:00 a.m. every morning. They hand out free sporting equipment from basketballs to weight belts. For those who are forgetful, the team offers hygiene items and a small selection of refreshments for a small fee. Once the final gym patrons rack their weights and head out the door, the staff closes down the fitness center for the night at midnight.

For service members who don't see what the fitness specialists do behind the scenes, their duties range from coordinating special events to conducting physical training tests.

The sports director schedules intramural flag football, basketball and volleyball seasons offered to base teams.

For those who don't enjoy lifting weights or prefer an alternative workout, the aerobics coordinator schedules classes for circuit training, kickboxing, Zumba and other exercises.

The fitness assessment cell conducts physical training tests four days a week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, tests are conducted for cardio-exempt Airmen.

Without the time and effort from the special events coordinator, there may not be any 5Ks or sport tournaments.

"I love doing special events," said Staff Sgt. Jordan Oslie, 36th FSS special events coordinator. "I love planning the 5Ks and coming up with the events."

"I enjoy the daily interactions with our customers," Redd said. "It amazes me when I see people accomplish their goals and it's wonderful knowing that this facility and its staff members play a vital role in improving peoples overall health. The Fitness Center promotes comradery, espirit de corps and overall wellness."

Later this month, the CRFC is hosting a 70's Sanders Slope Slaughter Run May 16 at 7:30 a.m. and a five-on-five basketball tournament May 20 at 2:00 p.m. (For more information, contact the CRFC at 366-6100.)
