Approximately 45 athletes from Team Andersen competed for positions on the men's and women's base volleyball teams April 6 through April 9 at the Coral Reef Fitness Center gym.

During the four-day tryout, potential players practiced volleyball fundamentals.

"We worked on the basics such as hitting, passing, setting and footwork, giving encouragement and pointers as we went," said Staff Sgt. Faith Chargualaf, Team Andersen volleyball tryout coordinator. "We have a good turnout of talent this year."

In order to be eligible for the team, Team Andersen members must be stationed on Andersen and at least 18 years old.

"We accept any active duty, Guard, Reserve or dependants as long as they meet the age and stationing requirements," said Maj. Andrew Cruz, future coach of the Team Andersen men's and women's varsity volleyball teams.

According to Major Cruz, there will be a varsity team for men and women and each may have a backup team. Players will be placed into 10-person teams according to their skill levels.

"I've noticed that people trying out are bringing everything they've got to the table," Sergeant Chargualaf said. "I can really see the pride in the people trying out. You can tell that they're excited about possibly being on the varsity base teams."

As soon as the teams are chosen, the teams will begin preparing for future tournaments with practices at the CRFC gym. The women's team will practice Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and the men's volleyball team will practice Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

"There are a couple tournaments that will be here soon," Major Cruz said. "There is an island-wide tournament which will be held the Memorial Day weekend and a Pacific Air Forces tournament, hosted by Andersen in September."

In the interim between tournaments, Team Andersen intramural volleyball games will also begin.

"There's no exact date set for when the volleyball intramurals will start," Sergeant Chargualaf said. "However, we're really excited about playing in the intramurals."
