Auto hobby shop provides Team Andersen mechanical opportunities

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam --  The base auto hobby shop gives members of Team Andersen the opportunity to learn a craft that will last a lifetime and save some money along the way.

This self-help facility offers classes to teach service members, retirees and family members how to properly maintain their vehicles.

Some classes the auto hobby shop offers are front brake replacement, how to change oil and tire repair, along with several others. The classes range from $15 to $45, and once someone completes a class, that person is allowed to rent out the stalls at the shop to work on a vehicle.

"Learning these skills can be cost-efficient and convenient for Airmen," said Syomi Dodd, Unit skills development center director.

"On base, you can do everything at your own pace and have a mechanic on hand to help you if you get stuck. Also, the prices off base are fairly expensive. Taking the classes available and acquiring these (skills) will only be beneficial in the long run."

The classes are scheduled every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday and can range from to 30 minutes to two hours. There are up to two instructors teaching a class depending on the number of students. These are also considered open classes; no registration is needed.

"Our main mission is to provide the Airmen with a state-of-the-art facility where they can enhance their automotive skills and work on their vehicles at a reduced price," said Ken Benavente, auto hobby shop mechanic. "These life skills are important for people to have; simple things such as oil changes can really help your car last a long time."

The auto hobby shop also provides short- and long-term storage for those who are deployed, on a temporary duty assignment or on leave.
