Guam High School female athlete selected to Guam All-Island Team

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- For the first time in a 10-year history of all sports in Guam High School, a female athlete was selected as a member of the Guam All-Island Team.

Christina Sheaks, daughter of Michael Sheaks, Department of Homeland Security/Customs and Border Protection Officer, has been selected to the Guam Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association All-Island 1st team.

Christina moved to Guam with her family in August 2005 and has since been playing for the Department of Defense School, Guam High Panthers basketball team.

Christina is a senior and a starting guard/forward for Guam High School. Over the years she has served as both captain and co-captain of her team and is averaging nearly 20 points per game this season. The first game of the season started Nov. 2, 2007, and the last game was played Dec. 11, 2007.

"Christina was instrumental in elevating the level of girl's basketball at Guam High School. Our competitiveness this year is largely due to Christina's ability to utilize the schemes that we designed offensively and defensively," said Joseph Taitano, Guam High School's basketball coach.

"Her eagerness to learn, listen, persevere and perform, transformed her into one to the best players in the league," said Mr. Taitano.

In February, Christina and her sister, Carmina Sheaks, a sophomore and the starting center for Guam High, will travel to the Department of Defense Far East Basketball tournament in Okinawa, Japan, along with the rest of their teammates.

During her junior year, Christina was named Most Valuable Player for Guam High, and received "Honorable Mention" to the All-Tournament Team during last year's Seoul, Korea tournament.

According to Christina's coach, during the sports banquet that took place Jan. 11, she received the Most Valuable Player and Most Dedicated award. In addition, she was recognized as being the team captain.

After graduation she plans to attend the University of Guam. She credits her first basketball coaches from Minnesota, Henry Thomas and Dee Tabone, for having confidence in her and helping her to develop her skills as a young player.

"This is my first season coaching Christina. I knew from the start that if she maximized her potential in all the training parameters for basketball, she would be considered one of the best," said Mr. Taitano, "Christina is an outstanding individual."
