Andersen Middle School cross-country teams win all-island meet

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam --  Andersen Middle School boys' and girls' cross-country teams competed against five other schools and placed first overall in the All-Island Cross-Country Meet May 7 at Asan Beach.

The boys' team hard work during the season paid off as Ahanu Kinney placed sixth, and Donovan Alger placed tenth out of 82 competitors, catapulting the team into first place overall.

"They worked so hard at practice, with some of the team members shaving two minutes or more off of their original running times," said Lillian Taitano, AMS's boys and girls cross-country coach. "It has really been a privilege to see the runners' dedication and hard work pay off."

The girls' team also received top honors, tying with Commander William C. McCool Elementary Middle School and Harvest Christian Academy for first place.

"The girls on the team also did very well in the meet," Ms. Taitano said. "The top two placers of the meet were from our team. Alexis Bosworth placed first and Quincy Tougher placed second."

Alexis Bosworth, daughter of Tech. Sgt. Scott Vermeire, 736th Security Forces Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of antiterrorism operations, placed first out of 52 female competitors.

"I had so much fun during the meet," Alexis said. "At my last base, we didn't have any programs like cross-country. I'm really glad that Andersen has several sports programs because it keeps me busy. Winning was awesome because our school has been working towards winning the championship for two years. I've trained really hard for two months, and it was satisfying to see that my training worked out."
