Top of the Rock series: 'High Tides' an Air Force tradition

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam --  Are you here on temporary duty assignment? Don't have a vehicle or don't feel like going all the way downtown to have a fun weekend? Well, the 36th Force Support Squadron has a place for you.

High Tides, Andersen AFB's enlisted club, offers enlisted service members a place to get together and have fun. The establishment has pool tables, Texas Hold 'Em tables, dart boards, karaoke, food and beverages for those who wish to socialize among their fellow enlisted peers.

Those transitioning through Andersen find High Tides a convenient location for fun, eliminating having to venture downtown.

"It's an Air Force tradition to have a club," said Catherine Schoenhals, 36th FSS Top of the Rock assistant manager.

High Tides is open on Friday and Saturday evenings.

"As long as you guys are making orders, we'll stay open for you," said Mrs. Schoenhals. "We do not have to shut down the building at 2 a.m. We offer drink prices that are significantly less expensive than it is downtown."

High Tide's profits have increased continuously since the end of September 2012. Management attributes the rise in profit to more marketing and communicating with customers.

"We have been trying to get a better feel for what customers want," said Mrs. Schoenhals. "We started offering karaoke because they wanted karaoke. We're bringing in professional pool tables because they're interested in pool tournaments.

"We also have poker tournaments on Saturdays," she said. "For the month of March, we're actually giving away an actual Texas Hold 'Em table."

Management is currently working on getting Ultimate Fighting Championship matches televised at the lounge in the future.

"We're open to any kind of suggestions," said Mrs. Schoenhals. "We have comment cards and the 36th Force Support Squadron website. Customers can also come in and talk with us in person or call us at 366-6166. We're here for the service members."
