36th Wing honors defenders during National Police Week Published May 15, 2026 By Airman 1st Class Kevin McCormick 36th Wing Public Affairs ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- The 36th Wing hosted National Police Week from May 11-15, 2026, bringing together service members, families and community partners to honor the dedication, sacrifice and service of law enforcement professionals across Guam and the Department of War. Established in 1962 after President John F. Kennedy signed a joint resolution designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, National Police Week serves as a time to recognize civilian and military law enforcement officers who protect and serve their communities every day. “It is held as a time of honor and remembrance for law enforcement officers of all types who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Courtney Gates, a 36th Security Forces Squadron operations officer. “For defenders, we take this time to honor our fallen 14 who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 9/11.” The 36th Wing began National Police Week with an opening ceremony on May 11, followed by a weeklong series of events centered on remembrance, resilience and camaraderie. “We kicked off things Monday with an opening ceremony,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Tiler Roberts, the non-commissioned officer in charge of confinement with the 36th Security Forces Squadron. “Followed by a memorial ruck on Tuesday for our fallen defenders. On Wednesday, we had a shooting competition, Thursday we had a golf tournament, and we wrapped up the week on Friday with a parade and closing ceremony.” While the purpose of National Police Week is to honor those who wear the badge, it also allows people outside of law enforcement to see and understand the commitment and demands of the career field. “One of the most important parts of this week is giving people outside of law enforcement a better understanding of what we do every day,” said Roberts. “A lot of what we do goes unseen, so this gives us the opportunity to highlight our mission, the responsibility we carry, and the professionalism required behind the scenes. It helps build trust, appreciation, and a stronger sense of unity across the installation.” National Police Week continues to serve as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement personnel across the Department of the Air Force and the nation, while reinforcing the enduring bond between defenders and the communities they serve.
