In conjunction with similar events at Air Force bases worldwide, Andersen Air Force Base will join its Guam neighbors in celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Air Force with Guam Air Force Week September 4 to 9. Thirty-sixth Wing commander Brig. Gen. Doug Owens will join Lt. Gov. Mike Cruz Tuesday in Adelup at his scheduled 9 a.m. signing of the governor's proclamation of Air Force Week.

The national commemorative period began Oct. 14, 2006 with the dedication of the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Va.

Today, more than 690,000 active duty, Guard and Reserve Airmen and civilians serve in the Air Force, defending America and its ideals in an ever-changing world. These men and women share the same ingenuity, courage and technological innovation that have long characterized the service.

Andersen Air Force Base was originally built as North Field in 1944 immediately following the liberation of Guam from its Japanese captors. A few years later, on September 18, 1947, the US Air Force became its own military service separated from the Army by the National Security Act of 1947.
