Andersen firefighters prepare to defend Guam competition title Published Sept. 26, 2007 By Tech. Sgt. Rudolph Mendiola 36th Civil Engineer Squadron ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- As part of the Fire Prevention Week observation, Team Andersen is invited to the second annual Fire Muster Competition scheduled for Oct. 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Agana Shopping Center. The Andersen Fire Emergency Services will defend their trophy and status of the "Best of the Best," on Guam, which they received in 2006 from the first Firefighter Muster Competition. All on-island fire departments, including Guam, Navy and Andersen, will participate. Events include a firefighter relay, engine pull, bucket brigade, water polo, apparatus display and demonstrations. "It's a great camaraderie experience to participate with our off-base counterparts and our Navy firefighting brothers," said Staff Sgt. Brent Watkins, 36th Civil Engineer Squadron fire department. "(Last year) each department put their best foot forward, but the axe is in our trophy case and we want to keep it there where it belongs." In order to better their performance for the upcoming competition, the Airmen have been practicing and competing against one another in several categories for the event, including the engine pull outside the Andersen fire department. The Airmen say they are excited and ready. "The real competition exists on all the emergencies we respond to, so we do our best to stay fit and not be complacent because we strive to win them all," said Staff Sgt. Francis Tagalog, 36th CES fire department.
