In the past year there have been 21 alcohol-related incidents committed by members of Andersen off base, according to the 36th Wing Safety office.

All Airmen, regardless of rank, should have a plan and a couple of back-up plans before they leave base, said Master Sgt. Morris Miller, first sergeant of both the 36th Services Squadron and the 36th Mission Support Squadron.

Several options are available. A few programs offered at Andersen are the Hertz shuttle, which can be reached by calling 646-5875 or 642-3210 and the SSAM shuttle, which can be reached by calling 689-SSAM(7726).

There are also other alternatives, such as carpooling with a designated driver, staying at a friend's house or calling a taxi. As on many bases, there is also a program called Airmen Against Drunk Driving.

"AADD is a great program to have as long as it is used properly," said Sergeant Miller.  "AADD should be used as a last resort when plans A, B, C, and D have all been exhausted."

There may be times an Airman may not plan on going out to drink but later decides to begin drinking. In this case there was no plan, but AADD is a good program for this situation.

"When utilizing AADD, we ask that you be considerate of the fact that others are using their personal vehicles," said Master Sgt. Karen Smith, 36th Logistics Readiness Squadron first sergeant. "Please be respectful of their property and treat it as you would your own, if not better."

AADD should not be used as a constant safety net. Airmen should always be prepared, have plans and not misuse the resources available to them.
