36th SVS renovates Tarague Beach Published Oct. 18, 2007 By Shamra Slappey 36th Services Squadron ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Have you ever wanted to take a step back into the past? Enjoy a simpler life? Go to the beach just to relax with friends and family? If so, Tarague Beach is the place to be. But anyone who hasn't visited Tarague Beach recently is sure in for a surprise. Tarague has been undergoing a facelift for the last eight months. The planning committee first met in February to hash out a vision for the future of Tarague Beach. This vision is "to make Tarague look like it did 50 years ago," said Alysse Seligman, the Pool and Beach Director. The vision has two parts: improving the safety of the beach and creating an aesthetically pleasing recreational park for all to enjoy. Because safety is the number one priority for Team Andersen, a semi-permanent buoy anchor system will be installed designating a safe swimming area. The existing buoy system is inadequate for Guam's harsh oceans conditions. During strong storms the buoys will break away, leaving the swimming area unmarked and swimmers unaware that they have moved into dangerous waters. Once installed, the new buoy anchor system will allow buoys to weather the strain of storms, strong currents and large waves. In addition to the buoy system, services is currently developing a plan for a permanent concrete lifeguard stand with additional storage for supplies and rescue equipment. However, until this stand is built, two portable fiberglass lifeguard stands will be put into place ensuring that all patrons are being guarded during swimming hours. Another safety improvement being made at Tarague is the removal of rocks from the water entry/exit point to ensure lifeguards have speedy access to those in duress. In order to ensure the safety of patrons during non-work hours, a position is being created for a Beach Patrol manager. The BP manager will be responsible for offering assistance to campers and beach-goers, while enforcing the rules and regulations. As campsite patronage increases with the addition of 35 grills and 25 picnic tables, the BP manager will act as the Outdoor Recreation liaison, providing patrons with an invaluable resource during non-duty hours. Last, but not least, a pet friendly walking trail is being developed at Tarague for those furry family members. The walking trail will have doggy bags available for the easy and convenient removal of waste. This will keep the trail looking fresh and inviting for all. The renovations that have already been completed, such as clearing overgrown vegetation from the campsites, have left a breathtaking view of the beach through the palm trees. This view is sure to entice families to take advantage of the campsites for a relaxing family adventure. Swimming, snorkeling or even playing at the new child's play area next to Bamboo Willies will ensure that Andersen's families make memories that will last them a lifetime. Also, Bamboo Willies is available for family dining starting at 5 p.m. on Fridays and at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Let Services do the cooking for your family and enjoy Andersen's newly renovated slice of paradise.
