Pumpkin patrolmen to keep Andersen trick-or-treaters safe Published Oct. 20, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Carissa Wolff 36th Wing Public Affairs ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Halloween in just around the corner and the 36th Security Forces personnel as well as volunteers from Team Andersen is ensuring that the trick-or-treaters are safe this year, during the third annual Operation Pumpkin Patrol. Volunteers will need to wear a reflective vest or belt and have a flashlight so they're readily identifiable to the parents and trick-or-treaters, said Staff Sgt. Ronica Grant, 36th SFS. Trick-or-treating hours in base housing are from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Patrolmen will be hitting the streets during these hours to provide safety for children and families who are out trick-or-treating, Sergeant Grant said. "There have been no previous incidents here on Andersen on Halloween, and we're going to keep it that way by patrolling base housing," said Staff Sgt. Todd Gammon, a member of the 36th SFS and point of contact for Operation Pumpkin Patrol. "Last year we had over 60 volunteers base wide which allowed us to cover a large amount of housing." Parents are encouraged to make sure their children cross streets carefully and carry flashlights. If anything seems out of the ordinary, contact a patrolman to handle the situation. Also, motorists are reminded to reduce their speed in base housing and watch closely for excited children running across the streets. The 36th SFS squadron always welcomes volunteers for Operation Pumpkin Patrol, even at the last minute. "There is no dead line for this event," Sergeant Gammon said. "We understand that some people have last minute changes to either their work schedule or personal life, and should not be stopped to try to help out." Anyone who would like to volunteer can contact Sergeant Grant at 366-4545 or Sergeant Gammon at todd.gammon@andersen.af.mil.
