It may not seem like the holiday season on Guam with 85 degree weather, sunshine and sand, but for more than 30 years, people here are helping to get everyone in the spirit.

Rota Walk is a free festive holiday event that takes place annually here with many lights and luminaries. This year's walk is scheduled for Dec. 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Everyone with access to the base is welcome to come out and enjoy a spectacular event with their family and friends. Rota Walk is a time-honored tradition and is quite an amazing event for all to see.

Houses will be decorated by the residents of Rota Drive as well as private organizations such as the Air Force Sergeants Association, Army Air Force Exchange Service and the Company Grade Officer and Top 3 councils. There will be performances by the Pacific Air Forces' Alaska Brass, Guam High School Jazz Band, Andersen Middle School students, Andersen's chapel and others. There will also be a live nativity scene (Las Pasada Walk) sponsored by the chapel.

In addition to the decorated homes, many residents will offer drinks and snacks to the walkers.

To take the Rota Walk, people may park at the Palm Tree Golf Course parking lot and along Bonnis Boulevard.

For safety reasons, the street closes to all vehicles at 5 p.m. Golf cart shuttles will be available from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to assist walkers who are physically impaired.

Other tips for walkers:
●Walkers are advised to bring an umbrella or raincoat, flashlight, water and a camera.
●Wear comfortable shoes as Rota Drive is about three quarters of a mile long with steep hills.
●Consider bringing a wagon or other device to pull children who are too big for strollers as the walk can seem long to children.
●Keep a close eye on children who might wander to see the lights.
●Keep children and pets away from the luminaries that line the road. The luminaries have lit candles inside.
