Airman's Attic resumes operations Published July 17, 2009 By Staff Sgt. Jamie Lessard 36th Wing Public Affairs ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- The Airmen's Attic reopened its doors inside the old base exchange adjacent to the commissary July 1. The Airmen's Attic is open Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. All ranks day will be the last Friday of each month. The attic will be closed on holidays and down days. The new facility offers more than 600 square feet of space to shoppers and those willing to donate items. Along with deferring the cost of living for military members, the Airmen's Attic also donates to charities like the Red Cross and to local schools. "Last year we donated [more than] 80 boxes of goods to Operation Christmas Drop," said Bernie McFarling, a community readiness technician at the Airmen and Family Readiness Center. "Whenever we get a bulk of school supplies, we deliver it to schools like Upi Elementary." Items that can be donated to the Airmen's Attic include small appliances, household items, clothing, shoes, baby items, uniforms, sports equipment and books. Larger items such as furniture must be coordinated through the Airman's Attic manager. "A lot of people don't realize that they can get college text books here for free," Ms. McFarling said. The Airmen's Attic boasts a single Airmen's area where new Airmen arriving on Andersen can find necessities they may need for their dorm rooms. Additionally, there will be raffles for "baby baskets" and larger items of value. "The Airmen's Attic has been a blessing for my family," said Sheila Castro, a spouse who volunteers while her children are in summer school. "I have six kids and they love this place."
