Andersen is home to more than 1,300 elementary and middle school students. Many students rely on dedicated volunteers to ensure their safety and help them achieve their academic goals.

The Adopt-a-School Program places service members in close contact with both Andersen Middle School and Andersen Elementary School making them available to lend a helping hand to students, teachers and parents whenever possible.

"This program is a very good opportunity for squadrons on Andersen to get involved," said Rebecca Duncan, Andersen school liaison officer. "Commanders basically give a point of contact for their squadron and choose a school to sponsor. I compile a list of all volunteer squadrons and when AMS or AES need volunteers, they are able to request an exact number of people and divide them up between volunteer squadrons to fill the need."

Volunteer squadron members will be put to good use assisting teachers and parents throughout the year with tutoring, cross walk duties, and various day-to-day activities.

"We can always use help during the school year," said Norma Jao, AMS guidance counselor. "Volunteers would be extremely helpful when the students need additional tutoring, during educational field trips and when we hold evening events such as band performances."

The Adopt-a-School Program bridges the gap between service members and the Andersen school system. It fosters both professional and mentor relationships between various squadrons and students who seek to excel in their studies.

"I believe partnership is important," Jao said. "This program helps to build strong relationships. We look forward to working with members of the different squadrons for years to come and seeing the progress students make as a result of the pairing."
