-- Andersen Air Force Base participated in a typhoon exercise June 11 to June 15.

"Typhoon Pakyo 12 is a joint exercise with Joint region Marianas and the Government of Guam preparing the island for the typhoon season that began June 1," said Maj. Bruce Murren, 36th Wing inspector general. "It allows us here on Andersen AFB the opportunity to educate newcomers on the hazards associated with tropical cyclones before they affect us and to practice the processes we have in place for securing our facilities and recovering from a typhoon in order to return the base to operational status."

Joint exercises, such as Typhoon Pakyo 12, are a great way for military bases and civilians to corroborate and develop a strong working relationship that benefits all members involved.

The community of Andersen and civilians of Guam participated in the exercise with hope that when a typhoon strikes Guam, servicemembers and civilians would be better prepared, already knowing accurate protocol.

The exercise simulated the steps that would be taken in a real world situation, honing the skills of Andersen personnel and educating civilians on the proper course of action Andersen AFB would take in the event of a typhoon.

Each squadron came uniquely into play when preparing for the exercise or supplying vital information.

"Tropical weather can be intense. You have the responsibility of notifying the entire base and all military facilities on the track of the storm, what the strongest winds will be, how much rain we will get and when everything will begin to affect Andersen," said Staff Sgt. Jacquelyn Payn, 36th Operation Support Squadron, weather flight forecaster. "This is all important information to relay, so families can prepare by making sure their outside items are secure, their shutters are closed and that they have obtained ample supplies for any power or water outages. Even though you are forecasting bad weather, it's all worth it when your forecast is correct and everyone was prepared."
