AMC flights for Andersen

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam --  Each year approximately 22,000 servicemembers and dependents travel around the world using Air Mobility Command space-available flights from Andersen.

AMC Space-A flights are considered a perk for military members and their families.

"AMC flights have been around for a while," said Senior Airman Cory Barber, 734th Air Mobility Squadron passenger service agent. "In the late 90s AMC flights became more systematic, and a priority category system was developed."

The categories are the following:

Category One: Emergency leave for active duty, dependents and Department of Defense civilians in connection with serious illness, death or impending death of a member of the immediate family. Passengers must be upgraded to this category.

Category Two: Active duty members on environmental morale leave with or without family members.

Category Three: Active duty members on ordinary leave status or traveling on permissive TDY for house hunting. Dependents when sponsor is deployed for 366 days or more.

Category Four: Unaccompanied family members traveling on emergency
leave orders. Dependents when sponsor is deployed for 120 to 365 days.

Category Five: Unaccompanied dependents traveling on command sponsorship letters.

Category Six: Retired military personnel and their dependents and Inactive Reserve members.

"You must first be on leave before you can sign up to take an AMC flight," said Tech. Sgt. Christopher Disanto, 734th AMS noncommissioned officer in charge of passenger service. "As soon as you are on leave you are eligible to fill out the paperwork, and from there you will check in at the terminal and mark yourself present."

Once marked present, the passenger will be presented with a 72-hour forecast of flights arriving and departing. It is imperative for passengers to understand flights are subject to change without prior notice.

"With the possibility of flights changing, it is recommended that passengers pack light if at all possible," said Airman Barber. "This helps passengers avoid carrying large amounts of luggage to and from the terminal."

With proper planning and research, AMC Space-A flights are an excellent tool for military families looking to travel while saving money.
