The first place winners were: 6th Grade, Leilani Salazar, "Hovercrafts" 7th Grade, Cameron Paradis, "Gauss in the House - Magnetic Induction" 8th Grade, Vicki Lucero, "What type of mouthwash kills the most bacteria?" The students, along with the others who placed, now have a chance to go on to the 35th Annual Guam Islandwide Science Fair on May 4. More than 250 students from sixth to eighth grade submitted projects that were graded by their teachers, and judged by 25 service members and two National Weather Service meteorologists. "The science fair is a showcase of students' work," said Mr. Kurt, AMS seventh grade science teacher. "It's an application of skills learned." Students had no guidelines regarding their choice of subject as long as the projects fell within the categories of chemistry, physical science, general science or biology. The projects were graded with the same judging criteria used in the Hawaii Science and Engineering Fair and International Science and Engineering Fair which are college-level competitions. The judging criteria included creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, and communication. "The students are all on their own, it bridges them to be successful in high school" said Ebony Bozeman, AMS eighth grade science teacher. "The students worked hard and did a wonderful job utilizing the steps in the scientific method. It was very obvious that students spent a great deal of time at home on their projects. I was pleased with the outcome."
