The purpose of Operation Iron Island is to test the Iron Dome, an effective, truck-towed, multi-mission mobile air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. The system was deployed by the Israeli Air Force in March 2011 to defend against rockets and short range missiles.
