Valiant Shield 2012
PACIFIC OCEAN (Sept. 12, 2012) Navy Diver 1st Class Ryan Conley (left) and other members of Explosive Ordinance Disposal Mobile Unit 5, Platoon 503 return to USS George Washington (CVN 73) after making final preparations aboard the ex-USS Coronodo for sinking the ship as part of Valiant Shield 2012. A live-fire event during VS12 later sank the ex-Coronado providing an opportunity for active duty forces to gain proficiency in tactics, targeting and live firing practice against a surface target and enhancing combat readiness of deployed units. Strict environmental compliance is observed during all SINKEXs. Each SINKEX is required to sink the hulk in at least 1,000 fathoms (6,000 feet) and at least 50 nautical miles from land. Surveys are conducted to ensure that humans and marine mammals are not in an area where they could be harmed during the event.
