Times remembered
ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam - Dr. John Treiber, 36th Wing Historian, and Lt. Col. Elizabeth Sweeney, deployed to Andersen in support of Valiant Shield, visits a monument commemorating the last B-29 mission of World War II, five days after the bombing of Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. The plaque also recognizes the other B-29 bomb wings that operated from the Marianas Islands. Colonel Sweeney's father Brig. Gen. Charles W. Sweeney piloted the B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. He is the only man who flew on both atomic missions. General Sweeney's mission originated from Tinian, an island located five miles southwest of Saipan. (Photo by Senior Airman Sonya Padilla\ 36th Wing Public Affairs)
