  • Andersen's beach ensures health of endangered turtles

“Only about 1 in 1000 baby turtles are expected to make it to adulthood due to dangerous circumstances and currently the number might be even smaller.” Josefa Munoz, University of Guam Sea Grant’s resident sea turtle biologist spent her morning monitoring and in some cases, rescuing the babies of the endangered Green Sea Turtle on Andersen Air Force Base. The Sea Grant team consists of Josefa Muñoz and Leilani Sablan of the University of Guam. The focus of the monitoring and excavating is to estimate the number of turtle eggs that successfully made it to the safety of the water and determine hatching success. Monitoring the nesting and hatching of endangered turtles helps ensure the continued health of their species and lets team Andersen act as good stewards of Guam’s many natural resources.
