The annual Scholarships for Military Children Program has announced its winners. Over 5,000 students applied for the scholarships at commissaries nationwide.

One of the lucky recipients of a $1,500 scholarship is from Andersen Air Force Base. Congratulations are in order for Regine Etienne, daughter of Navy Master Chief Roger Etienne of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Twenty-Five. She is planning to attend the University of Florida.

The scholarship program began in 2000 and is open to graduating high school seniors or college-enrolled students who are sons and daughters of active duty, guard, reserve, retired or deceased military members.

Applicants for 2008 were required to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average, demonstrate leadership qualities and actively participate in community and voluntary school activities.

"The cumulative grade point average remains in the 3.7 to 3.9 range," said Bernard Cote', President of Scholarship Managers.

Each applicant was required to write an essay on why every able bodied citizen should or should not be required to serve in the military for a minimum of two years.

The program has awarded over 4,000 scholarships totaling more than $6.4 million dollars. "We are excited to report that the scholarship program continues to be a success in helping military families defray the cost of education," explains Defense Commissary Agency Chief Operating Officer Richard Page.

The Scholarships for Military Children is one of many programs available for children of military personnel.

If you are a well-rounded high school student that meets all the requirements necessary to apply; you too may be able to receive a scholarship through this program.
