Guam Toastmasters are scheduled to have their first official meeting at the Health and Wellness Center here May 9.

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that has clubs operating worldwide to help members boost their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.

During meetings, the club president assigns roles, and members will have to efficiently execute their appointed roles as leaders, speakers and evaluators. Immediate feedback is given by the evaluator for improvement on weak areas.

"We rely on each other to help with our speaking skills and to help us perform better with communication or leadership," said Tech Sgt. Robert Alvarado, 36th Medical Operations Squadron Physical Therapy NCO in charge.

According to Alvarado, it is highly encouraged for people who want professional development and leadership training to attend. The classes are going to be a biweekly hands-on positive training environment.

"As people progress in their careers, they need to know how to communicate confidently without leaving anyone confused," said Staff Sgt. Kamaile Long, 36th Force Support Squadron Airman Leadership School instructor. "The Toastmasters can help people out, especially if they get an early start."

"The program is for any person who wants to be a better speaker, communicator, or leader," Alvarado said.

The membership is open to people age 18 and older wishing to develop their communications skills. This includes any service member, as well as civilians.

Toastmasters will meet on the second and fourth Thursday of every month from noon to 1 p.m. For more information or to apply please e-mail Alvarado at robert.alvarado.1@us.af.mil.
